Globally, universities and their partners have been identified as drivers of sustainable development. The key role played by language(s) in mediating the relationships with sustainable development is rarely a part of these conversations. This is true in the UK, where monolingual working, teaching and assessment in English is the accepted norm, but it is also often the case contexts in the postcolonial Global South where English has long acted as the sole official language of instruction in secondary and Higher Education, despite the inherently multilingual nature of broader societies.
The Strathclyde Institute of Education in conjunction with the Centre for Sustainable Development invite you to this symposium, with the aim to facilitate discussion across contexts about the role of language in Higher Education to contribute to sustainable development. This conversation will be hosted in the Global North, it will be led by researchers from the Global South, as part of a British Academy-funded research project in Kenya and Tanzania.
We invite anyone with interests in this area to the event, particularly community-based practitioners with a connection to Higher Education.
