Description
In May 2005 Scottish CILT responded to a request from Modern Languages teachers in Aberdeenshire for a different type of CPD input based on the project approach, previously trialled in schools in Edinburgh and elsewhere. This project supported curriculum development arising out of collaboration between Modern Languages and Support for Learning staff. Catriona Oates , one of Scottish CILT 's Outreach officers, provided consultancy and research support for the project, along with Hilary McColl, its originator.
During session 2005-2006 two Aberdeenshire schools took part in the project.
Four half-day sessions with the consultants were interspersed with in-school collaborative work focused on target groups nominated by the schools. In one school two mixed ability S2 classes had been giving cause for concern, in the other the focus was on a group of S4 learners who were felt to be seriously underachieving in Standard Grade Reading.
Responses from teachers and pupils involved in the project have been very positive and other schools have expressed an interest in doing similar work in the future.
