Join us for an inspiring (free) in-person session with Stuart Farmer, Institute of Physics (IOP), and Fhiona Mackay, Scotland’s National Centre for Languages/Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools, to hear about the opportunities, benefits and issues around subject-specific professional learning (SSPL) and explore how they might be improved across the curriculum.

Stuart and Fhiona will discuss key points from the Subjects Matter report, which looks at subject-specific continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers. The report is based on the IOP’s collaboration with over 50 educational organisations, subject-specific societies and individual specialists, who drew on a wide range of evidence from England, Scotland and Wales.

Le Monde sans fin (World Without End) is an original and eco-designed exhibition constituting a visual variation of the comic strip Le Monde sans fin by Jean-Marc Jancovici and Christophe Blain. The exhibition offers a selection of content and works illustrating and questioning the major issues linked to the environmental crisis. The exhibition also addresses possible solutions.

There will be two additional features related to recycling and ecology on specific dates during the exhibition.

Noting the apparent contradiction between a national commitment to play-based learning and the absence of this in the teaching of languages, M.Ed Tania Czajka will present a case study on the use of creative puppetry as a means to enhance not only levels of engagement and confidence among the children, but also a valuable tool for the professional development of teachers and early years educators involved in the delivery of languages. For this, Tania will draw from her experience as an Early Years Practitioner, author and puppeteer as well as her own research.

Primary teachers of French join the Institut français for their 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics themed workshop "A vos marques, prêts…partez!". 

The workshop aims to top up your French and/or boost your confidence with language, pronunciation tips and culture around the theme of sport with tailor-made practical classroom activities around listening, talking, reading and writing skills.

Suitable for French-language primary schools’ teachers, with different levels of French; all language levels split in two ability groups (self-assessed, beginner to intermediate/advanced).

Two groups running parallel:

• Beginner level group: min: 5 / max: 10
• Intermediate/Advanced level group: min: 5 / max: 12

British Council, GCHQ and the Civil Service Languages Network are working together to promote language learning among pupils in UK schools.

Your 12-14-year-old pupils, who will soon be choosing their Nationals subjects, are invited to an open, online event, where they will hear from speakers with different roles across government who have used languages in their career, and how either studying a language in school, or speaking a heritage language, has improved their life. Pupils will have the chance to ask the speakers questions (via their teacher) through a Q&A session.

Applications are open to take part in UK-German Connection’s funded bilateral health and wellbeing training seminar taking place 14-17 June in Birmingham. This opportunity is for UK and German teachers to explore aspects of health and wellbeing in schools through a bilateral, joint approach. Teachers will develop knowledge and skills to devise strategies to support pupils and their wellbeing, as well as the wider school community. The seminar is in English and is open to teachers and schools with no existing UK-German school partnership. Schools do not need to offer German as a subject to take part. The course is delivered in association with LFEE Europe, who will provide the course content.

At a time when French, as a subject of study, is struggling to keep its position as one the major foreign languages studied at secondary school and university levels in Scotland, it is more important than ever to assess the situation and share ideas and examples of good practice that are having a real impact on the ground.

This free one-day event, co-organised by SCILT and the University of Strathclyde will give us the opportunity to:

1. Take stock of the situation in Scotland across the secondary education and higher education sectors;
2. Offer a platform for initiatives looking to promote language learning in general and French in particular, including potential partnership with French counterparts;
3. Share experiences and good practice amongst secondary school and university teachers.

The aim of The Future of French en Écosse conference is to provide a forum for all stakeholders, a place and time for assessing the situation and for building a positive future for French in Scotland.

We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the CercleS 2024 conference. We are presently reviewing abstracts and hope to notify authors by mid April, with a draft final programme available from late April 2024.

The CercleS conference is an excellent opportunity for those involved in languages education to come together every two years and to share ongoing activities, and to discuss ongoing challenges and opportunities, at an international level.
