Alva Academy

School: Alva Academy
Project: Languages Week Scotland
Date: May 2024

Alva Academy’s submission consisted of a wide range of projects involving all year groups and languages studied. These projects ran throughout the year in the lead-up to Languages Week Scotland.

These projects included:

  • S1-3 Careers Week, bringing in former pupils and staff to talk about their careers in languages, using My World of Work to research languages jobs and looking at transferable skills in language learning
  • Creating their own version of Espacios Increíbles for S3 French and Spanish classes
  • Running a European Christmas stall and quiz as an entrepreneurial fundraiser
  • An IDL project learning about and making a range of French foods.

All of these projects involved a variety of partnerships within and beyond school, bringing together all agencies to maximum effect.

The verification team commended Alva Academy on the range and breadth of projects evidenced in their submission. They demonstrated strong cross-curricular collaboration as well as excellent partnership working with a range of local organisations, businesses and former pupils.

The team particularly highlighted the really practical nature of so many of these projects as they focused on developing and practising real-life skills as well as learning about the usefulness of languages in the workplace.

In covering all year groups, including ASN learners, Alva Academy’s employability projects also demonstrated an exemplary level of inclusion, providing activities for all ages and needs. This is truly a suite of activities that is for everyone and is thoroughly embedded in every area of the department’s work. It was great to see to see how the school is also still seeking to go further with this and to build even more on the excellent work that they are already doing with languages and employability.
