School: Drummond Community High School
Project: S1 Languages Breakfast
Level: Bronze
Date: May 2024

Drummond Community High School hosted an S1 Languages Breakfast featuring employers from Edinburgh Zoo, the Financial Times, a local hotel, and the Institut Français d’Ecosse. This event aimed to provide S1 learners with an insight into how a second language can help them in life and work.

The event consisted of twenty-minute-long workshops from each organisation delivered in a carousel model, in which they each shared how they use languages daily. Each workshop was followed by a Q&A session, allowing learners to engage directly with employers.

The event was very well received by learners and plans are underway to hold a similar event for S3.

The verification team commended a number of aspects of this submission. Firstly, the strong partnership working with the DYW coordinator has clearly led to the success of this project and is proof of the need for the support that DYW coordinators bring. Working together, the department and the coordinator have delivered an event that is well thought-out and which incorporates a varied and interesting range of partners and of languages. The short, snappy and interactive format clearly works very well, and the positive feedback was good to see.
