Holy Rood RC High School

School: Holy Rood RC High School
Project: Modern Languages Speed Networking Breakfast
Level: Bronze
Date: May 2024

The event aimed to connect S4 learners with employers who use languages in their roles, directly or indirectly. This exposure broadened students' understanding of the practical applications of language skills in various careers, encouraging them to continue studying modern languages as they select their senior subjects.

The event featured structured speed networking sessions where pupils rotated between employers such as a local German/English Tour Guide, Napier University and Visit Scotland, engaging in brief, focused conversations about how languages are used in various job roles. Employers shared insights, answered questions, and provided real-world examples of language applications.

The event significantly enhanced students' understanding of the practical value of language skills. It encouraged sustained interest in modern languages and provided unique career insights. The enthusiasm of S4 students during and after the event reflected its success.

The verification team saw this project as a very good example of a well-planned, well thought-out and focused intervention at a key stage. Learners clearly benefited from the opportunity to engage with a wide range of employers covering different sectors and different languages.

The verification team members were impressed by the clear aims and careful execution of the event, and of the strength of the collaborative partnership with their DYW coordinator. The impact of all of this is evident in the success of the event, the positive feedback received and the plans to continue and expand the event on future.
