Kirkintilloch High School

School: Kirkintilloch High School
Project: Languages open doors worldwide: Pathways and careers
Level: Gold
Date: May 2024

Kirkintilloch High School’s submission consists of a wide range of projects aimed at engaging, inspiring and developing learners in S3-S6. These projects included:

  • An S3-S6 careers fayre
  • Building employability into an S5 trip to France by studying training routes available in France then looking at how to train as a baker. This culminated in two two-hour workshops during the trip visiting a bakery to meet and interview staff, find out more about their work and learn about career pathways.
  • Mock interviews at a French château during an S4 trip. This followed presentations to the group on the advantages of taking a gap year to work there.
  • S3 research into companies leading to virtual interviews in French and Spanish of employees there.

In all of these projects, and the others included in this submission, the experiential learning approach made language acquisition more relevant and enjoyable for learners as well as giving them direct insight to, and experience of, the place of languages in a range of workplaces.

This was an excellent submission which covered a wide range of projects which were all very well planned and integrated.

The verification team were particularly impressed by the project around vocational training in France which contains such a rich opportunity for language confidence and real employability skills to be developed. This is truly experiential learning, and it was great to see the impact of it in learners’ feedback and engagement. This was clearly a wonderful learning experience for the learners who accessed it.
