Milne's High School

School: Milne's High School
Project: Various
Level: Gold
Date: May 2024

Five projects:

  • S1 French partnership with a local hotel and Visit Moray Speyside, designing hotel brochures to the hotel’s specifications
  • S1 German project to support staff of the Scottish Dolphin Centre via language training and creation of support materials
  • S2 French work with Visit Moray Speyside to learn how to present a tourist area to visitors, focusing on French-speaking destinations around the world
  • S2 French first aid project
  • S3 French and Visit Scotland partnership – a project about using video skills and language to promote the area.

Through these projects, learners are able to see first-hand that being able to speak another language makes them more employable and will open doors for them in the future; they see a purpose in learning to speak French and German. As well as learning that languages are valuable skills in themselves they see  that in languages classes they learn skills, e.g. communication, presentation and first aid, that will benefit them in the future.

Following on from a highly successful Silver Award last year, and the verification comments from that, the department at Milne’s High School incorporated an additional language opportunity by bringing the learning of German to life through involvement with the Scottish Dolphin Centre. The verification team loved this authentic use of language right from S1 and commended the vision and creativity of the department and their partners at the Scottish Dolphin Centre in devising this.

All of the projects in this submission were highly praised by the team, who commented on the range of projects, the accessibility of activities, the relevant focus of tourism for their location, and the integration of the projects as a thread running right through the BGE languages curriculum at Milne’s High School. This was an excellent submission.
