The Ramshorn Time Capsule competition

SCILT and CISS present a new poster competition aimed at S2-S3 learners in Scotland. Learners are invited to design the contents of their own time capsule – past or present – to join in with the celebration of Glasgow Doors Open Day 2022! This competition is an opportunity for learners to share their cultural heritage, demonstrate their creativity, and showcase their language skills, both learned at school and used at home.

The Ramshorn, a category A-listed building located in the Merchant City of Glasgow, and home of SCILT/CISS, will open its doors during Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival on 16 and 17 September and celebrations will include an exhibition about the building.

How to take part

Channel your inner creativity and showcase your language skills to design your poster! On your own or in groups, research the history of The Ramshorn and its place in Glasgow and Scotland to help create your own past or present time capsule items:

Past: a time capsule has been discovered!

You have struck it lucky and found a time capsule buried in the surrounding areas of The Ramshorn Graveyard. When was it buried? What does it contain? Who lived in the area at the time and what might they put in their time capsule?

Task: Draw five items to help us find out about life in the past (18th and/or 19th century). Provide a short description for each and tell us why you have chosen them. Don’t forget to use your language skills here!

Hint: Your past time capsule could include such items as a map, a letter, a newspaper, a trinket, a ticket, a piece of material or metal, a weapon, a manuscript or painting, a tool, photographs, stamps and coins.

OR

Present: create your own time capsule

If you could create your own time capsule to bury in The Ramshorn Graveyard, what items would you preserve and share with future generations in 100 years’ time? Consider what might The Ramshorn be used for in the future, and who would find the time capsule.

Task: Draw five present day items, provide a short description for each and tell us why you have chosen them. Don’t forget to use your language skills here!

Hint: Your present time capsule could include such items as a book/magazine, a device, artwork, an autograph, a utensil, a small instrument, a non-perishable food item, money, stationery, photographs and items of sentimental value.
