David is a qualified and fully GTCS registered French, Spanish and Italian teacher with experience in primary, secondary and higher education contexts.
Having studied French, Spanish and Education at the University of Stirling, with his year abroad spent in Spain, he wanted to gain more hands-on teaching experience so he worked for the British Council as an English language assistant for two years. He first taught at university in the coffee region of Colombia and subsequently taught at two high schools in Sicily.
David then returned to Scotland to study for a PGDE in French and Spanish at the University of Glasgow. As he was unsure where to teach during his probationary year, and feeling a sense of adventure, he ticked the “anywhere” box, expecting to be sent up north… but was placed in St Ninian’s in the Southside of Glasgow! David then taught at Lomond School in Helensburgh for over two years and, during his time there, obtained an online Master’s in Education at the University of Glasgow, investigating the effects of CLIL on language learners’ critical thinking while also completing a CCEd in Italian at the University of Strathclyde.
With his experience of teaching within the Curriculum for Excellence framework from P7 to S6, he was keen to have a positive impact on the wider language educational landscape in Scotland. Since January 2023 David has been working on a PhD based at the University of Stirling, focusing on an evaluation of the Scottish Government’s 1+2 languages policy. His funding is provided by the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities (SGSAH) and SCILT is the partner organisation at which he is based. As part of this, he has been lead researcher on the Francofoot/Calciamo project in schools.
