More learners will be travelling to China thanks to the Turing Scheme

Author: Jude Wood, British Council

The Turing Scheme is the UK Government’s scheme to provide funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world.

Schools funding can give pupils the chance to learn abroad. Organisations can apply for funding to send pupils to learn abroad. It is an opportunity for learners to gain new skills, raise aspirations and get a better understanding of other cultures.

More than 100 learners from across Scotland will be travelling to China in 2022 to learn about the language and culture thanks to a grant of almost £286,000 from the Turing Scheme.

SCILT secured the funding for the CISS immersion programme. CISS operates a network of Confucius Classrooms and provides a hub in one primary school and one secondary school in 23 local authority areas across Scotland.

Pupil immersion visits to China have been running for many years as part of the programme. In 2022, Turing Scheme funding will mean that students who might not normally be able to take advantage of the opportunity will have the chance to take part. The participants will attend a summer camp organised by the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission.
