In 1836, a military pronouncement in Santiago de Cuba sparked a brief popular uprising in which people of different racial backgrounds demanded civil and political rights. Havana’s authorities crushed the movement. This talk will address that failed revolution through the case of Candelario Villafaña, a free man of colour brutally punished for challenging the established order.
Led by Dr Jesús Sanjurjo (University of Strathclyde) and Yaimara Izaguirre (Universidad de La Habana) on behalf of the Hispanic Society of Scotland.
