SCILT’s flagship multilingual poetry writing competition Mother Tongue Other Tongue is back for 2025-26 with a refresh! This year we are taking it back to its roots with a focus on the written word and creative use of language.

To this end, we are hosting a poetry writing workshop for practitioners who are interested in taking part with their learners on Wednesday 26 November at 4pm. We’ll explain a little of the background to the competition and why it is a great opportunity for young language learners, explain the aims of MTOT and how teachers can facilitate this. We’ll hear from some creative writing experts who’ll share their expertise and signpost some useful resources to help with your poetry lessons.

To sign up for the workshop, please register on Eventbrite

MTOT 2025-26 is open for registration until 28 November and the deadline for submissions is 21 February 2026, International Mother Language Day. To register your school to take part in the competition please complete this form.

The Franco-British Youth Ocean Conference (27-28 November 2025) invites S4-S5 French learners to participate in a fully funded environmental initiative.

Five Scottish schools will send 6 pupils and 2 teachers each to collaborate with French peers in a COP simulation focused on ocean sustainability. This exciting opportunity - part of France's "Year of the Sea" - allows pupils to enhance language skills while tackling marine environmental challenges through international collaboration. The programme includes pre-event webinars, a conference in Paris, plus the chance to develop lasting school partnerships.

Applications welcome from all Scottish secondary schools, particularly those in coastal communities.

Visit the website for more information and to express interest by 4 June.

The theme for our secondary Big Question workshops this year is Developing a linguistic mindset; we are looking at what that means, why it matters and how we can create a learning environment which encourages it, to the benefit of our learners.

If you haven’t looked at it before, you may find this report useful in considering this concept.

Workshop 3: Experiencing Language

Wednesday 10 December 4.00 – 5.15

In this workshop we will discuss the notion of developing a linguistic mindset through the language that learners experience. How can we ensure that this is age-appropriate, relevant to them, and will lead to authentic linguistic experiences and practices? There will be lots of opportunity for discussion, hearing from Heather McKirdy, our special guest practitioner and asking questions. Come and join us!

Look out for dates, further information and booking details for our final Big Question workshop in this series (Workshop 4 title: Celebrating Language) after Christmas.

All of our seminars are free to attend and are open to all secondary languages teachers and student teachers. The Big Question sessions will be hosted on MS Teams and will not be recorded.

Registration for Language World 2026 is now open!

Taking place 13-14 March in Leicestershire, the theme for the 2026 event is Collaboration at the heart of languages education.

The theme is deliberately broad to encourage all language educators – whatever their language or phase of teaching – to come along and join the action, so that we can grow professionally and, over time, inspire future generations to love their languages.

If you have something you would like to share at the event, submissions are being accepted until 4 November.

Visit the website for more information and to register.
