The theme for our 2025-26 workshops is Developing a linguistic mindset. In these workshops we will consider what that means, why it matters and how we can create a learning environment which encourages it, to the benefit of our learners.

Workshop 2: Producing Language

Wednesday 17 September 4.00 – 5.15

In this workshop we will discuss the notion of developing a linguistic mindset and how this can help our learners produce language with increased confidence, clarity and creativity. We will consider this with particular regard to talking, while also considering the implications for other skill areas. There will be lots of opportunity for discussion, hearing from practitioners and asking questions. Come and join us!

All of our seminars are free to attend and are open to all secondary languages teachers and student teachers. The Big Question sessions will be hosted on MS Teams and will not be recorded.

Aberdeen

During this talk hosted for the European Day of Languages, Drs Fransiska Louwagie and Clémence O’Connor (University of Aberdeen) will discuss Aberlangs, a partnership initiative supporting multilingualism and the presence of home, heritage and community languages in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Promoting Aberdeen as a City of Languages which celebrates multilingualism as a positive force within the city and its broader surroundings, the initiative aims to bring together researchers in languages, linguistics, cultures and societies from the University of Aberdeen with a broad range of local and regional stakeholders and rightholders. Cities of languages build on the idea that languages learning and the value of home, heritage and community languages (of Scottish as well as wider origins) are an asset to both individuals and collectives. The project draws on the unique cultural and international heritage of the North East of Scotland and offers a platform to celebrate multilingualism in its communities.

In this live online session, we will begin by exploring the current state of play for Italian in Scotland’s schools, taking into account the numbers of candidates presented for national qualifications and the results of the 1+2 survey. We will then hear from three teachers who have recently introduced and successfully established Italian in their schools, before break-out rooms will enable participants to discuss strategies for growing Italian in their own contexts. Lastly, we will look forward to the network’s first in-person event, in spring 2025, which will allow teachers of Italian to come together to share and moderate resources for teaching.

Growing Italian in Your School will be of interest to teachers in Scotland at all stages of their journey in Italian: those already teaching the language; those registered in Italian but not yet teaching it; those at any stage of working towards a qualification in Italian; and those interested in studying Italian in future.
