School: Newbattle High School Project: Musée national des mines d'Écosse Level: Bronze Date: June 2025
Following the completion of the Holidays unit with S3, a class discussion was held regarding potential tourist attractions in Dalkeith. It was determined that the National Mining Museum of Scotland would have the biggest appeal for visitors.
In collaboration with Developing the Young Workforce (DYW), a guided tour of the museum was organized to provide learners with a first-hand experience. During the visit, learners documented key information and personal highlights.
Subsequently, through a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach, learners explored the website of the Saint-Étienne Mining Museum in France. They were then able to have a better understanding of different areas of the website and reviews that visitors had left. The class then highlighted key vocabulary from the website along with vocabulary to express their opinions and recommendations acquired during their Film/TV unit to create an article to advertise The National Mining Museum of Scotland to a French audience. Their article was then sent to the Museum who published it on their website.
The verification team loved this project from Newbattle High School! It is an excellent project which really cleverly incorporates a key local organisation. Using the website of a French mining museum to compare and identify needs was inspired, and really reinforces how language skills open doors to global opportunities. It was great to see a tangible outcome of the project in the form of the article advertising the museum that was created by learners, and which was celebrated by the partner organisation too. We commend this project as a fantastic example of making meaningful connections between the local area and that of a target language country, while also developing employability and language skills. This earns Newbattle High School a very well-deserved BRONZE award – congratulations!
