There were three elements to Viewforth High School’s submission.

S1 - A group of S1s were tasked with managing a budget and completing a series of tasks designing sustainable communities, sustainable homes and creating advertisements for their work. They learned Spanish vocabulary around places in town, areas of the home and sustainable features in cities and homes. They worked in groups throughout the project and built teamwork, financial literacy and problem-solving skills.

S2 – A group of S2s were tasked with managing a budget and completing a series of tasks designing food festivals and menus in Spanish. They worked in groups throughout the project and built teamwork, financial literacy and problem-solving skills.

Throughout the tasks, the focus was on SDGs 2 (Zero Hunger) and 3 (Good health & well-being) and learners were encouraged to ensure their food festivals and menus reflected this. They learned Spanish vocabulary around healthy eating and food insecurity.

S3 started the ‘Discover Kirkcaldy/Descubre Kirkcaldy’ project as a strategy to encourage learners to appreciate their local area and hometown. They picked local businesses/organisations of interest to them to research and promote to Spanish-speaking tourists, and wrote briefs/blog posts in Spanish with an overview of their business. These were presented to the partners at a Q&A session where representatives from the organisation visited us to tell us about their jobs, answer questions the pupils had prepared and provide branding input on a social media advertisement the pupils would prepare.

Through the range of projects in S1-S3, learners developed their understanding of what it means to be a global citizen and the role they play as a member of the Kirkcaldy community towards sustainable development. They took leadership within their own contexts to design communities, food festivals and marketing campaigns which addressed a number of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Viewforth High School’s SLEA – Green submission was a joy to read! It gave a comprehensive overview of the interlinked projects that spanned three year groups very effectively. The verification team really appreciated the strong evidence of excellent planning, delivery and evaluation/ next steps. This has clearly been a very well-thought-out project – congratulations!

The verification team highly commend this project as a great example of incorporating Learning for Sustainability into the languages curriculum. The Summary of BGE Projects document gives an excellent overview of the language skills, skills for life and work, SDGs and tasks covered across S1-3 and demonstrates an exemplary approach. The SDGs are meaningfully blended into the learning of each year group and give a clear, strong thread of global citizenship right across the BGE. There is also strong evidence of impact and development of target language skills across all years.

This project has been awarded SILVER in recognition of outstanding work across a number of year groups. If another language (either taught or community) were included in a future submission then this would be a very strong candidate for a Gold Award. Huge congratulations once again to all at Viewforth High School!
