The Open University is currently running two programmes of moocs (massive open online courses) in Spanish and Italian on the FutureLearn platform. Each programme consists of six four-week courses, and are aimed at learners at A1 level of the CEFR. The first Spanish course had nearly 30,000 active learners.
In this presentation Tita Beaven, a Senior Lecturer in Spanish at The Open University, will discuss the pedagogical design of the moocs, provide a snapshot of the learners, and point to some of the challenges of teaching on such a massive scale. She will also provide an overview of the research being conducted on the moocs in the areas of growth mindset, motivation, and peer assessment.
