The Royal Society for Asian Affairs - together with the University of Edinburgh and the Confucius Institute for Scotland - would like to invite your school, and in particular your S4, S5 and S6 students, to attend a full-day, conference-style event on on Asia. The event is free of charge, and lunch is provided. Travel grants are available to support schools and students who would otherwise be unable to attend.
The programme is being finalised, but we expect it to include Dr Alasdair Alan MSP, Scottish Government Minister for International Development and Europe; Dr Rizal Suka, Indonesian Ambassador to the United Kingdom; explorer and travel writer Ben Jones; James Brodie of the China Britain Business Council and others. Cultural events, including bhangra dancers and Chinese performers, as well as language tasters – in Arabic, Chinese and Hindi – will run in the afternoon.
The aim is to introduce students to subjects and issues they may not have previously explored, which we hope will inspire them to take a closer interest in Asia. The conference is open to all in the 15-18 age-group, or younger students with the interest and maturity to benefit from the event. Those interested in pursuing geography, law, religion, international affairs, social sciences or Asian language pathways may find it particularly relevant. This is our second annual event in Scotland.
