Living Languages 2020: A conversation with Ben Sharrock and Irune Gurtubai

Living Languages 2020 is a joint initiative from Languages@Strathclyde and SCILT, focusing on employability

Ben Sharrock, Writer and Director 

Ben is an award winning writer and director. His debut feature film, "Pikadero" premiered at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in September 2015 and picked up a series of awards. The film was recognised by the Spanish Film Academy as an "outstanding contribution to independent Spanish cinema". Ben has been hailed as “a new voice in Spanish cinema”. 

Ben is from Scotland and graduated from The University of Edinburgh with a degree in Arabic and Politics before attending Screen Academy Scotland. He graduated with an MA Distinction in Film Directing followed by an MFA in Advanced Film Practice, for which he was awarded the Rafford Scholarship and the university medal for outstanding achievement.

Irune Gurtubai, Film Producer

Irune produced "Pikadero". Prior to this, she produced the short film "Patata Tortilla", which won two BAFTA New Talent Awards. Irune has worked at Altitude Films in London as part of their acquisitions team, as a line producer and as a script developer for feature films.

Irune attended Screen Academy Scotland where she graduated with an MA in Film, and later returned to complete her MFA in Advanced Film Practice, for which she was awarded the university medal for outstanding achievement. Between studying for her MA and MFA, Irune spent a year in Dubai working for a TV commercial production company.

More about the Living Languages series

Living Languages offers language learners at all stages an opportunity to hear from high-profile guests and early career graduates, from a variety of sectors, on the role of languages in their professional lives.

Guests will share their experiences through a relaxed conversation format and the audience will be encouraged to ask questions. These events allow learners to hear about languages in the workplace as well as practise their own language skills.
