Event Date: 29/11/2021 17:00 - 18:30
We are all aware that Mathematics underpins all STEM subjects, but have you ever thought there are connections between learning mathematics and studying the structure of a language?
Join mathematicians and linguists from the University of Edinburgh to explore the topic further.
During this hands-on workshop, you will have a go at some puzzles and activities. You might end up exploring the underlying structure or numerical systems of languages from around the world, or deciphering inscriptions and constructing short sentences in unfamiliar languages. Together we will explore how language works and where maths comes into play.
You will have a chance to discuss with Mathematicians and Linguists about similarities between their subjects.
You will get ideas to take to your classroom and show your students how Maths is everywhere.
All Scottish primary and secondary Maths or Language teachers are invited. The activities we are going to use are mainly aimed at children older than 10 years. However, the approach can be applied to all year groups.
