Event Date: 14/11/2023 16:30 - 17:30

The Languages Gateway is a new portal for languages in the UK to help coordinate access to and availability of information about languages to a wide audience.  It attempts to mirror similar initiatives in STEM subjects, covering access to information on policy, education, research and professional practice.

Following a launch event hosted at the British Academy on 18 October, on-line launch events will follow throughout November with a focus on each of the four nations of the United Kingdom.

The launch event with a focus on Scotland will take place 16:30-17:30 on Tuesday 14 November 2023, via Zoom.

The event is aimed at those involved with language policy, language education and research at all levels from primary to higher education, and provision of language services in both the public and private sectors, including technology, publishing exam boards.  This relates to all languages, including Scots Gaelic, English, and BSL, as well as all other world languages. Our interests cover everything to do with languages from primary school to lifelong learning (including supplementary schools), to promote the value of an improved understanding of languages, societies and cultures across the UK, and to increase the numbers of individuals engaging in language learning across all languages, all levels and all modes of study.

Speakers at the event will include:

  • Professor Charles Forsdick, Lead Fellow for Languages at The British Academy and Professor Antonella Sorace, Fellow of the British Academy to place the initiative in the context of a national languages strategy for the UK
  • Philip Harding-Esch, independent consultant, to showcase the website itself
  • Shona Hugh, Education Scotland, to offer a Scottish policy perspective

Speakers will talk for 30 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A.

Zoom links will be shared one week before the event to those who have registered.
