We’ve given a lot of support over a number of years to the development of the 1+2 Approach and the key target and aim for us is to make sure that it is embedded within our education system.

Leading learning in languages

The Languages Leadership Programme is the flagship national leadership programme. Jointly run by Education Scotland and SCILT in partnership with colleagues from the Languages Network Scotland (LANGS), the programme offers Masters level professional learning that supports schools, clusters and local authorities to build leadership capacity. Free places on the programme are offered to post-probationer teachers working in the public sector, who has, or aspires to have a role in leading languages education for young people, families and colleagues in and beyond their own workplace. Affordable places may also be offered at a fee to educators working in the independent sector with a similar role/aspiration. Costs available on request.

The programme comprises three elements, which together lead to GTCS Professional Recognition: leading languages education at Masters level. Participants are encouraged to keep a professional journal and submit four reflective posts in the course of the year. Participants are supported by a team of critical friends, all of whom are previous programme participants.

Core: two days of professional learning for participants led by Education Scotland. Running parallel, two days of professional learning for critical friends led by SCILT.

Choice: a varied programme of online workshops offered on a variety of strategic and current issues related to leadership of languages education. Led by Education Scotland, SCILT or LANGS partners, these inputs take place across the year.

Recall Day: an opportunity for participants and critical friends to come together and share their leadership journeys so far. A 15 minute presentation to a small group, followed up with a short written submission.

Across the seven cohorts of the programme to date, we have welcomed c.300 participants from across Scotland, with alumni going on to take on leadership roles in languages at school, cluster, authority, RIC and national levels.

  • I feel excited, passionate and full of confidence to lead on languages in my context, thanks to the 1+2 Languages Leadership Summer School! I have gained a wealth of knowledge, ideas and resources that I cannot wait to put in to practice. (1+2 LLP participant 2019-20)

Feedback on the Professional Recognition option:

  • The small group approach [to Recall Day] was very reassuring and actually very enjoyable.  Would I recommend doing it? Absolutely! If you've taken the step to come to Summer School then you owe it to yourself to complete the process … Plus, it gives you a chance to catch up again with the many lovely friends that you make over the course of [Summer School]  (1+2 LLP participant 2018-19)

Applications for the programme are closed at the moment, but please email SCILT for more information.
