Event Date: 24/02/2023 12:30 - 16:00

In partnership with Education Scotland, SCILT is delighted to invite you to attend a hybrid knowledge exchange event on Friday 24 February, to mark the end of Languages Week Scotland 2023 (LWS).

The theme this year for LWS is ‘languages for a peaceful world’ – as we know, Scotland is a multicultural society, with a rich and diverse linguistic repertoire.

The knowledge exchange event aligns with the objectives of Linguapax International, specifically the ideas that:

‘Languages can be unique links to the identity of individuals and communities. Defending multilingualism helps preserve different realities, knowledges and visions of the world and life …

In environments where linguistic diversity is greater there is more tolerance and respect for difference. Cultural plurality is a driving force for dialogue and peace.'

As an attendee, you will engage with inspirational talks and roundtable discussions led by classroom practitioners and education professionals with a focus on the importance of valuing language skills in reference to:

  • the importance of intercultural understanding
  • respect for human rights
  • the value of peace

The event will begin with opening remarks from Fhiona Mackay, director of SCILT/CISS, followed by keynote speaker Lisa Panford, a Senior Lecturer and Course Lead for Secondary Languages at St Mary’s University in Twickenham, with over 14 years’ experience teaching languages in secondary schools in London. Her research draws upon her current experiences as a teacher-educator and previous experiences as an educator and a student of languages to highlight the complexities that People of Colour face in the languages classroom. Lisa is intentional about connecting theory to practice and the urgency of amplifying conversations around race and racism in order to realise the transformative potential of languages education for all children in schools.

The afternoon will conclude with plenary speaker, Louise Glen, Senior Education Officer of Languages at Education Scotland. Louise is a passionate exponent of language learning and is responsible for the provision of national curricular support, advice and guidance for languages in the primary and secondary sectors in Scotland.

Closed captions and live BSL/English interpreters will be available (online) during the event.

Visit the website to book your place by 1pm on Wednesday 22 February, for your chance to explore the creative and impactful ways that Scotland's educators are centring and harnessing the power of multilingualism in our schools and wider communities.
